80 Percent of Restaurants in ‘This’ City Fail FSSAI Hygiene Standards; Inspection Reveals Alarming Reality

Nagpur, renowned for its vibrant culinary scene, is facing a disconcerting revelation following a recent inspection conducted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Out of 200 restaurants scrutinised, a staggering 80% fell short of meeting FSSAI’s stringent criteria for cleanliness and safety, prompting concerns about the potential health implications for diners in the city.

The inspection brought to light a myriad of hygiene violations that could compromise the well-being of patrons. This unsettling reality underscores the necessity for robust adherence to safety and hygiene regulations, particularly as the food culture in Nagpur continues to flourish with an increasing number of people dining out.

Amidst changing lifestyles and an upsurge in post-work dining trends, ensuring food safety and hygiene in restaurants becomes paramount. FSSAI, as the regulatory body overseeing these standards, plays a pivotal role in monitoring compliance. The recent inspection revealed a stark disparity, with some food establishments upholding exemplary hygiene standards, while a concerning majority failed to meet the essential cleanliness benchmarks.

Stringent rules have been implemented to address these health-related concerns, directly impacting public safety. Restaurants are mandated to comply with guidelines encompassing clean kitchens, screening open areas, tiled walls, proper lighting, clean chimneys, and adherence to rigorous food preparation standards. Additionally, employees are required to wear caps and gloves, and regular pest control measures are emphasised to maintain a hygienic environment.

The inspection was carried out under the ‘Eat Right Challenge’ campaign, involving an agency of experts appointed by FSSAI. Restaurants that meet the stringent hygiene criteria will be awarded a certificate of cleanliness, valid for two years. This initiative seeks to enhance awareness about food safety and foster compliance among eateries.

The disconcerting reality of 80% of restaurants failing hygiene standards in Nagpur emphasises the urgent need for consistent adherence to safety regulations.
