Hyderabad is no longer the capital of Andhra Pradesh. According to Section 5(1) of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, Hyderabad was designated as the common capital for both states for up to ten years from the appointed day, June 2. Section 5(2) states that after this period, Hyderabad will solely be the capital of Telangana, requiring Andhra Pradesh to establish a new capital.
Andhra Pradesh, however, still lacks a permanent capital, with legal battles over Amaravati and Visakhapatnam ongoing. Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has proposed Visakhapatnam as the administrative capital, Amaravati as the legislative capital, and Kurnool as the judicial capital, should he retain power.
‘For the record, AP had stopped using Hyderabad as its capital soon after bifurcation in 2014, retaining only a few buildings in the city. The latest separation between the two Telugu states will be symbolic but is an important milestone all the same, a political observer noted.
