Multiplier Grants Scheme: Bridging the Gap Between Innovation and Commercialization

Date:

The Multiplier Grants Scheme (MGS) is an initiative by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) aimed at fostering collaboration between industries and research institutes in India. With a focus on electronics and information technology (E&IT), the scheme seeks to enhance the commercial viability of innovations while bridging the gap between research and global market demands.

Objectives of the Multiplier Grants Scheme

MGS is designed to:

  • Strengthen partnerships between industries and R&D institutions.
  • Promote industry-oriented research and indigenous product development.
  • Accelerate the transition from proof-of-concept to commercialization.
  • Support the development of innovative solutions in E&IT.

Features of the Scheme

MGS provides funding for collaborative research projects initiated jointly by industries and academic/R&D institutions. The scheme includes:

  • Grant Limits: Up to ₹2 crore per project for individual industries and ₹4 crore for industry consortiums.
  • Project Duration: Maximum of two years for individual industries and three years for consortiums.
  • Focus Areas: Proposals should foster innovation in modules, products, or services in E&IT, with a clear commercialization plan.

Eligibility Criteria

Institutions and industries meeting the following requirements are eligible:

  • Institutions offering professional courses (B.Tech, M.Tech, or Ph.D.) in ICTE.
  • Proven track record in research, publications, or prior collaborations with industries.
  • Minimum of five years of existence for institutions.
  • Industries with adequate infrastructure and manpower for technology absorption.

Process of Implementation

  1. Proposal Submission: The research idea should originate from the industry or an industry consortium, with project proposals submitted jointly with academic/R&D institutions to DeitY.
  2. Market Research: Proposals must include a market survey covering target audience, demand-supply chains, pricing, and SWOT analysis.
  3. Grant Disbursement: Funding is released in phases after a formal agreement on intellectual property rights and periodic review by DeitY.
  4. Review Mechanisms: A dedicated Working Group (WG) and Project Review & Steering Group (PRSG) oversee technical and financial progress, ensuring the project’s feasibility and adherence to objectives.

Benefits of the Scheme

  • Encourages innovation and development of indigenous technologies.
  • Bridges the gap between academia and industry for impactful R&D.
  • Accelerates the commercialization of prototypes and products.
  • Enhances India’s position in global technology and product markets.

How to Avail the Scheme

Interested parties can submit their proposals during periodic calls for applications issued by DeitY. For detailed information, including eligibility, proposal submission guidelines, and the latest updates on the scheme, visit the MeitY website.
