Food and grocery delivery company Zomato has announced a corporate name change to Eternal Ltd., while keeping the Zomato brand for its food delivery app. CEO Deepinder Goyal confirmed the decision on Thursday, unveiling a new logo and explaining the change in a letter to shareholders. Zomato’s name change follows the acquisition of Blinkit and aims to reflect the company’s broader business focus.

Corporate Name Change and Business Structure

The Zomato board has approved the name change, and shareholder approval is now awaited. Once finalized, the company’s corporate website will transition from zomato.com to eternal.com, and the stock ticker will change from ZOMATO to ETERNAL.

Eternal Ltd. will oversee four key businesses:

  • Zomato (food delivery)
  • Blinkit (quick commerce)
  • District
  • Hyperpure (B2B food supply)

Goyal explained that the company began using Eternal internally after acquiring Blinkit to distinguish between the corporate entity and its brands. He said Zomato’s rebranding became necessary once Blinkit became a major revenue driver.

Zomato’s Evolution and Market Growth

Goyal reflected on Zomato’s journey, noting that it originally launched as Foodiebay in 2007 before rebranding to Zomato. The company made history by becoming the first Indian startup to enter the BSE Sensex on December 23, 2023. He emphasized that the rebranding is not about financial gains but aligns with the company’s evolving vision.

“This journey has created tremendous wealth—not just for me, but for our employees, institutional investors, and retail shareholders. But I did not start Zomato to make money. I started it because I wanted to do something worthwhile with my life,” Goyal wrote in his letter.

Regulatory Approvals Pending

Zomato’s rebranding is subject to approvals from shareholders, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and other regulatory authorities. The Zomato app and brand will remain unchanged, ensuring no disruption for users.

Public Response and Social Media Reactions

The announcement received mixed reactions on social media. Many users criticized the move, arguing that Zomato was already a well-recognized name.

“Perfect example of fixing something that’s perfectly fine and probably end up breaking it,” a user commented on Goyal’s post on X (formerly Twitter).

Another user reacted negatively to the Zomato name change, writing, “Bhai eternal se mangwate hai na khana? Sounds ewww.”

Others found the new name confusing, with one stating, “Zomato was not just a name, it was an emotion.” Some also joked that Eternal sounded more like a company focused on longevity research than a food delivery business.

Some users suggested consolidating Zomato, Blinkit, and other services under a single app to improve user experience. “Too many apps kill the user experience. Let’s make things simpler for the customers,” one user commented.

Company Outlook

Despite the backlash, Goyal defended the move, stating, “Eternal is a powerful name, and to be honest, it scares me to my core. It is a tall order to live up to. Because ‘Eternal’ carries both a promise and a paradox.”

While approvals are still pending, the renaming signals Zomato’s shift toward a multi-business strategy. It remains to be seen how customers, investors, and stakeholders will respond to this transformation.
