Chennai: In a recent development, the Indian government has issued a directive to e-commerce platforms regarding the classification of certain beverages as health drinks. The move comes following an investigation initiated by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), which raised concerns about the labeling and categorization of products like Bournvita.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) highlighted the absence of defined standards for ‘health drinks’ under the FSS Act 2006, prompting the Ministry to take action. As a result, specific beverages, including Bournvita, are to be removed from the health drinks category on e-commerce platforms.
The advisory aims to enhance clarity and transparency in product labeling, ensuring that consumers are not misled about the nutritional content and health benefits of such drinks. Last year’s controversy surrounding Bournvita sparked discussions and led to a notable reduction in added sugar content, demonstrating the impact of consumer awareness on product formulations.
In light of these developments, consumers are urged to stay informed about FSSAI guidelines to make healthier choices. Furthermore, businesses are encouraged to apply for FSSAI licenses to uphold standards and promote consumer trust in the food industry.
