FSSAI Inspection on Spice Quality Amid Masala Controversy

Date:

In response to quality concerns raised by Singapore and Hong Kong, the food authority in India has initiated FSSAI inspection and sampling of powdered spices from various brands nationwide, including renowned names like MDH and Everest, according to a government source.

‘Given the recent developments, FSSAI is conducting extensive sampling of spices from all brands, including MDH and Everest, to verify compliance with FSSAI standards,’ the source informed PTI.

Operating under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, FSSAI routinely conducts such sampling exercises to evaluate product quality in the domestic market. However, it’s important to note that FSSAI Inspection does not regulate the quality of spices intended for export.

Concurrently, the Spices Board of India has taken action to address the bans imposed by Hong Kong and Singapore on specific Indian spice blends. These bans were prompted by alleged excessive levels of the pesticide ‘ethylene oxide’ found in four products: MDH’s Madras Curry Powder and Sambhar Masala Mixed Masala Powder, along with Everest’s Fish Curry Masala and Curry Powder Mixed Masala Powder.

A B Rema Shree, director of the Spices Board of India, assured that the board is actively investigating the matter. ‘We are looking into the matter. We are at it,’ Shree stated.

The measures taken by Singapore’s Food Agency and Hong Kong’s Center for Food Safety have been decisive. Singapore has mandated a recall of the affected products, while Hong Kong has issued advisories urging consumers to refrain from purchasing them and instructing traders not to sell them.

This move underscores the commitment of regulatory authorities to ensure food safety and uphold quality standards, both domestically and internationally.

Vakilsearch’s legal experts appreciate the swift action taken by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in response to spice quality concerns flagged by Singapore and Hong Kong. The initiation of extensive sampling of powdered spices, including those from prominent brands like MDH and Everest, demonstrates a proactive approach to ensuring consumer safety and upholding regulatory standards.

While FSSAI’s efforts primarily focus on evaluating product quality within the domestic market, it is essential for spice manufacturers to remain vigilant and adhere to stringent quality control measures to maintain consumer trust and prevent potential regulatory sanctions. As the regulatory landscape evolves, we stand ready to assist spice manufacturers in navigating FSSAI compliance requirements and help in food licensing.
