FSSAI Shakes Up Certification Norms: BIS, AGMARK No Longer Required!

In a groundbreaking move, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has declared a significant shift in the certification requirements for food products. The 43rd meeting of the FSSAI witnessed a landmark decision to eliminate the necessity for Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) or AGMARK certification for food products already holding an FSSAI license.

This progressive step implies that Food Business Operators (FBOs), ranging from local vendors to large enterprises, need only obtain FSSAI certification, negating the need for separate certifications from Agmark or BIS to ensure quality standards.

‘In streamlining the certification process, food businesses will no longer navigate multiple authorities; only FSSAI certification will be mandatory for food products,’ stated an official spokesperson.

The move is anticipated to significantly enhance the ease of doing business in the food industry across the nation. The decision aligns with FSSAI’s commitment to simplifying regulatory procedures and fostering a more business-friendly environment.

The FSSAI, a body comprising representatives from diverse ministries such as Commerce, Consumer Affairs, Law, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, States, and industry stakeholders, finalised these amendments during a meeting chaired by the Union Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, who serves as the Chairman of the FSSAI.

In addition to reshaping certification requirements, FSSAI is taking steps to establish standards for ‘Haleem,’ a dish crafted from meat, pulses, grains, and other ingredients. Currently lacking defined standards, this move is set to bring uniformity and quality assurance to Haleem production.

Further approvals by FSSAI include the formulation of standards for ‘Mead’ (Honey wine) and Alcoholic Ready-to-Drink (RTD) beverages, alongside the revision of standards for milk fat products. Implementation of these amendments is contingent upon due notification and public comments.

This strategic overhaul by FSSAI not only modernises the certification process but also demonstrates a commitment to adapt to evolving industry needs, ensuring a safer and more standardised landscape for the Indian food business.
