GHMC Serves Distress Warrants to Property Tax Defaulters in Hyderabad
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has begun a new phase in its effort to collect property tax dues. As the financial year 2023–24 approaches its end, the civic body has escalated its measures by serving GHMC distress warrants to property tax defaulters in Hyderabad. This comes after repeated notices failed to yield the desired results in tax collection.
Over Rs 600 Crore in Arrears Identified
GHMC officials have identified over 4.80 lakh defaulters who owe a total of Rs 600 crore. Initially, the civic body aimed to recover Rs 685 crore under the One Time Scheme (OTS). So far, they have collected Rs 77 crore. However, with only a few days left in the financial year, GHMC must recover the remaining Rs 605 crore urgently. GHMC distress warrants property tax defaulters are now being issued to ensure quick collection of the dues.
GHMC Distress Warrants Property Tax Defaulters Served Under GHMC Act
To expedite the recovery process, GHMC is now serving distress warrants to property tax defaulters under Section 269 of the GHMC Act. These warrants primarily target commercial property owners who have ignored prior notices. Despite offering a 90% waiver on interest for overdue taxes, many property owners have yet to pay. As a result, GHMC tax officials have started sealing commercial properties and seizing movable goods through a formal panchanama process to recover the outstanding amounts.
Focus on Defaulters Owing Over Rs 1 Lakh
GHMC has instructed its deputy municipal commissioners and tax inspectors to issue distress warrants to property owners with arrears of over Rs 1 lakh. These defaulters will face property seizures as part of the collection process before the financial year ends.
What’s Next for Tax Defaulters?
GHMC has already served over four lakh notices to defaulters in the past few weeks. Now, tax officials are ramping up enforcement. Property owners who ignore the final notices will face property seizures, signaling GHMC’s firm commitment to recovering overdue taxes.
