In a startling revelation, five GST officials from the Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGI) face serious allegations of demanding a staggering ₹5 crore bribe from a Ghaziabad-based businessman. The accused, now booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act, were stationed at the DGGI Gurugram office.

The victim, Arun Kumar Som, Director of SKS Electricals, recounted a harrowing tale of a raid on his Ghaziabad office and subsequent intimidation tactics. The GST team, allegedly acting without a warrant, detained one of his directors, prompting Som to disclose that the officials demanded the exorbitant bribe to settle the matter. Fearful for his safety, Som claimed to have paid ₹2.35 crore but asserted that the officials persistently sought more, insisting that the money would be distributed among higher-ups.

Frustrated by the lack of police action, Som took matters into his own hands, approaching the court under CrPC 156 (3) to demand the registration of an FIR against the accused GST officials. Finally, after a court order, the Ghaziabad police registered an FIR under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

In a detailed complaint, Som unveiled the extent of the officials’ extortion. He described the confiscation of company assets during the raid, arrests made without warrants, and relentless threats for additional payments. Even after paying ₹3.25 crore, Som alleged that the harassment continued, with a new investigating officer demanding an extra ₹50 lakh in January 2023.

This shocking revelation raises serious concerns about the misuse of power within GST offices. The legal battle unfolds as Som seeks justice, shedding light on the urgent need for accountability and transparency within government agencies entrusted with upholding the law.
