Massive Disruptions Over the JPC Report
Both Houses of Parliament witnessed uproar on Thursday over the tabling of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) report on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The Opposition alleged that dissenting remarks had been removed from the report, leading to heated exchanges and adjournments. The government, however, firmly rejected these claims.
Commotion in Rajya Sabha
The uproar began when BJP MP Medha Vishram Kulkarni tabled the JPC report in Rajya Sabha. Opposition Leader Mallikarjun Kharge immediately objected, claiming that dissent notes were deleted. Calling the report “farzi” and anti-democratic, he urged Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar to reject it. His remarks sparked loud protests, forcing the Upper House to adjourn temporarily.
Government Denies Allegations
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju dismissed the Opposition’s claims as “false and misleading.” He asserted that the report accurately documented committee discussions and amendments. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also accused the Opposition of spreading misinformation to disrupt parliamentary proceedings.
Tensions Escalate in the House
The session became more chaotic as Vice President Dhankhar reprimanded the protesting MPs. “You should learn some basic manners,” he told them, escalating tensions further. Despite the government’s repeated clarifications, the Opposition remained firm in its stance, leading to continued disruptions.
Walkout by Opposition in Lok Sabha
Similar scenes unfolded in Lok Sabha when JPC Chairman Jagdambika Pal tabled the report. Congress, Trinamool Congress, and Samajwadi Party MPs stormed the Well, shouting slogans. AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi and Independent MP Abdul Rashid Sheikh also joined the protest. Eventually, the Opposition staged a walkout, only to return minutes later.
Amit Shah and Speaker Om Birla’s Statements
Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the Opposition’s concerns, stating that any disputes raised by members had been included in the report’s annexures. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla confirmed that committee members had approached him and that their concerns were duly noted. However, his clarification failed to pacify the Opposition, which continued its protests.
Political Divide Deepens
With both sides refusing to back down, the controversy over the Waqf (Amendment) Bill has further widened the rift between the government and Opposition. As the political battle intensifies, all eyes are now on the upcoming parliamentary sessions to see how the issue unfolds.
