LG Energy Solution Opts Patent Licensing to Prevent Infringement

Date:

LG Energy Solution (LGES) is taking a bold stance against infringements in the electric vehicle (EV) battery sector by announcing its plan for patent licensing its battery technologies. In an exclusive interview, Lee Han Sun, head of LGES’ intellectual property center, revealed the company’s strategy to tackle the surge in patent violations amidst fierce competition in supplying EV makers.

The move comes as LGES, the world’s second-largest EV battery producer, faces increased competition, particularly from China’s CATL. Lee Han Sun emphasised that LGES will not hesitate to issue warning notices or pursue legal action against those suspected of infringing its patents.

Lee highlighted the growing challenge posed by newcomers in the EV battery sector, leading to a proliferation of price wars and patent infringements globally over the past few years. LGES has identified instances of patent infringements in numerous countries, including the United States, India, and China, with approximately 580 patents being violated and numbers expected to rise.

Among the technologies affected by infringements are cylindrical battery manufacturing processes, electrolytes for high nickel batteries, and silicon anode technology, crucial areas for EV battery production. LGES aims to address these challenges through innovative patent monetisation models, such as forming a global patent pool and licensing out technology in phases.

Despite the surging demand for EV batteries, projected to reach over 750 Gigawatt hours (GWh) in 2023, the sector faces challenges in the current year due to cooling EV demand. This slowdown is reflected in Tesla’s recent decline in quarterly EV deliveries and legacy automakers reallocating investment away from EVs.

Lee emphasised the importance of patents in justifying investment in research and development, citing LGES’ substantial expenditure of $4.5 billion over the past decade. He noted instances where rivals, by infringing on LGES’ technology, gained battery supply orders through lower-priced products, underscoring the critical role of patents in maintaining competitiveness and innovation.

LG Energy Solution’s proactive approach to protect its intellectual property underscores its commitment to innovation and competitiveness in the rapidly evolving EV battery market. As the industry continues to grow and evolve, LGES remains at the forefront, ensuring the integrity of its technology and driving forward advancements in electric mobility.
