On 9 February 2024 Myanmar intellectual property department (IPD Myanmar) released an official announcement stating that it is now accepting applications for registration of copyrights and related rights as per the Copyright Law of 2019.
As per the Copyright Law of 2019 which was reinforced in 31 October 2023 totally replaced the old Copyright Act of 1914. The ministry of commerce in Myanmar issued the copyright rules setting the required procedures for all copyright related matters in my number. As per this update forms are required for registration and related actions regarding coffee rent were directly issued by the MOC. This update was notified under notification No.73/2023 on 20 November 2023. All the official fees related to the same were also outed by the IP agency through the notification No.1/2024 on 13 February 2024.
It is highly suggested that the holders voluntarily apply for registration for copyright protection under the new framework of the Copyright Law of 2019. It is crucial to secure stronger evidence of ownership for their creative works in Myanmar. The applications can be filed both offline and online in-person with the help of a local representative. The government has also provided options to deliver the filed applications through post. In case of applicants residing out of the country they must appoint a local representative to file the application with the Myanmar intellectual property department.
