Nestle India has firmly denied accusations of selling baby food products of High Sugar in Cerelac, particularly in developing nations like India. Chairman and managing director, Suresh Narayanan, dismissed these claims as racially stereotyped and baseless.
Addressing concerns, Narayanan highlighted that the added sugar content in Cerelac is significantly lower than the upper limit set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). He emphasised that the product poses no risk to children, meeting stringent safety standards.
According to FSSAI guidelines, the permissible level of added sugar is 13.6 grams per 100 grams of feed, while Nestle’s Cerelac contains only 7.1 grams, well below the prescribed limit. Narayanan stressed that the company’s infant food formulation adheres to global standards and is continuously being refined to meet nutritional needs.
Despite facing scrutiny, Nestle remains committed to improving its products. Narayanan mentioned plans to introduce Cerelac without added sugar in India, although a specific timeline is yet to be determined. He assured consumers that efforts to reduce sugar levels are ongoing.
Regarding concerns raised by FSSAI, Narayanan clarified that the controversy has not significantly impacted Cerelac sales. He emphasised that the amount of sugar in infant foods is determined by nutritional requirements, irrespective of geographic location.
Narayanan underscored Nestle’s adherence to international standards, including the Codex requirements, ensuring product safety and quality. He reaffirmed that both added-sugar and no-added-sugar products are available globally, dispelling any notion of racial bias.
