Osmania University Seeks Trademark for Arts College Building Facade

Osmania University applies to trademark its Arts College facade, safeguarding its heritage. Hyderabad’s iconic Osmania University Arts College building is about to undergo a significant transformation as it gears up to become a trademarked structure. The move comes as Osmania University (OU) aims to protect its intellectual property rights and preserve the integrity of its historic architecture.

‘We have taken the initiative to trademark the building due to the observation of numerous private institutions using its iconic facade for their promotional activities, despite having no affiliation with the university. Trademarking will grant us exclusive ownership, preventing unauthorised use for logos, souvenirs, and merchandise without our consent or royalty payments,’ stated G.B. Reddy the Intellectual Property Rights Chair at OU’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to a famous news article.

Under the guidance of Subhajit Saha, a TradeMark (TM) agent and Intellectual Property (IP) practitioner, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade-Intellectual Property Rights Chair of Osmania University has initiated the process of filing for the trademark of the exterior design of the OU Arts College, in accordance with the Indian Trademarks Act of 1999.

The significance of this move resonates globally, as several renowned buildings, such as the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building in New York, and closer to home, the Taj Mahal Hotel and Bombay Stock Exchange in India, have already been trademarked. Similarly, iconic structures like the Eiffel Tower in France and the Sydney Opera House enjoy trademark protection.

Once the trademark registration is complete, third-party usage of the building’s image for commercial purposes, including marketing services and branding merchandise like T-shirts and souvenirs, will be strictly regulated, requiring prior authorization from Osmania University.

The design of the Osmania Arts College building, credited to Belgian architect Ernest Jasper, is a testament to the fusion of architectural influences from the Nizam’s dominion with Mamluk elements. Completed in 1939, the structure boasts intricate details such as the recessed semi-dome at the entrance and ornate carvings, showcasing a blend of cultural heritage and architectural brilliance.

With this bold step towards trademarking its historic Arts College building, Osmania University not only seeks to safeguard its intellectual property but also reaffirms its commitment to preserving the rich heritage of Hyderabad’s architectural landscape.
