Patent Granted For MIT WPU for a Device That Cleans Oil Pipeline Deposits

The faculty and student team at MIT World Peace University (WPU) has successfully obtained an Indian patent for their innovative invention, the Smart Inline Pipeline Inspection Instrument (SILI). The gadget, which was created as a result of their success in the 2019 Hardware Edition Hackathon, provides proactive ways to identify and address problems that impede pipeline oil flow.

According to former project participants, SILI offers real-time insights on wax thickness and deposition rates, guaranteeing pipeline integrity and saving significant expenditures in cleaning operations. Together with mentors Vignesh Shenoy, Sanket Shinde, and Snehal Kolekar, team members Pruthviraj Patil, Slawyn Mascarenhas, Viraj Jiwane, Ashwajeet Pawar, Deepak Kumar Yadav, and Riya Huddar worked on this creative solution.

Patil emphasised SILI’s significance, stating, ‘Currently, oil companies undergo costly cleaning cycles every 15 to 25 days. SILI’s sensor technology enables predictive analysis of wax deposition, optimising cleaning frequency and reducing production losses. This approach saves both time and money.’

In addition to hardware, the group demonstrated their interdisciplinary abilities by creating a thorough web application for visualising pipeline profiles. An important step forward for the project was recently achieved with the Indian Patent Office’s approval of MIT WPU’s 2021 patent application.

Reflecting on their journey, Huddar remarked, ‘Working on a project given by an oil company provided invaluable practical experience. We learned the nuances of sensor technology and web applications, along with essential teamwork and communication skills.’

The success of SILI underscores the university’s commitment to fostering innovation and addressing real-world challenges in the field of engineering.
