Piyush Goyal Calls for Faster Trademark and Copyright Implementation
New Delhi, 20 March: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday stressed the urgent need to reduce delays in implementing trademarks and copyrights, calling for a more efficient enforcement system. Speaking at the National Intellectual Property (IPR) Awards, he urged reforms to streamline the intellectual property (IP) process and ensure stronger protection for rights holders.
Goyal highlighted that India has become the sixth-largest country for trademark filings, reflecting the increasing awareness and participation in IP protection. He also noted that nearly 100,000 patent grants were issued last year, attributing this to efforts in clearing the backlog.
‘As confidence grows in the swift processing and approval of patents, more individuals and businesses are choosing to file patents in India,’ he stated.
Challenges in Trademark and Copyright Processing
Despite the progress, Goyal acknowledged that trademark processing continues to be time-consuming. He emphasised the need for reforms to compress the time taken for trademark and copyright approvals and enhance the enforcement of copyright laws.
‘We need to reduce delays in enforcement so that copyright and trademark owners are better protected from unscrupulous elements,’ he said.
Strengthening IP Enforcement and Awareness
The minister also highlighted the necessity of improving the skill set of IP examiners and strengthening enforcement mechanisms. He stressed the importance of expanding intellectual property awareness beyond metro cities to tier-two and tier-three cities, ensuring a robust IP ecosystem across the country.
‘The government is working towards making the intellectual property framework more efficient, but we must also ensure that people in smaller cities understand the importance of IP protection, he added.
Goyal’s remarks underscore the government’s commitment to making India’s IP landscape more effective and accessible. By reducing bureaucratic delays and strengthening enforcement, India aims to boost innovation, encourage businesses to protect their intellectual assets, and solidify its position as a global leader in intellectual property rights.
