Sam Pitroda Revisits His Statements; Analysis on Inheritance Tax in India

Sam Pitroda, chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, ignited a political firestorm with his recent commentary on inheritance tax. His statements prompted Prime Minister Modi to criticise the Congress for its alleged stance on increased taxes and opposition to the transfer of earned income to heirs. However, the Congress swiftly distanced itself from Pitroda’s remarks, with spokesperson Jairam Ramesh emphasising that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had abolished estate duty back in 1985.

Pitroda’s assertion that inheritance tax should be implemented to ensure the redistribution of wealth stirred controversy. He argued that individuals should be obliged to leave half of their accumulated wealth to the public, a notion he deemed fair. He contrasted this with the current scenario in India, where heirs inherit the entirety of their parent’s wealth, leaving nothing for the public.

The crux of the matter lies in Pitroda’s comments aligning with the Congress manifesto, which advocates for addressing the growing wealth disparity through policy changes. This stance, coupled with Rahul Gandhi’s calls for economic and institutional surveys, has fueled BJP’s allegations that such measures could pave the way for wealth redistribution. As the debate rages on, the issue of inheritance tax has emerged as a pivotal point of contention, reflecting broader discussions on economic equality and policy reform.
