ToggleTamil Nadu Reinstates Land Allocation for Film Industry Workers
The Tamil Nadu government has reinstated a 90-acre land allocation in Payyanur, near Kelambakkam, for film industry workers. This decision brings relief to thousands of professionals who had long sought the renewal of the government order.
Tamil Nadu’s 2010 Land Allocation for Film Workers
In 2010, during M. Karunanidhi’s tenure, the Tamil Nadu government leased 90 acres for 99 years at an annual rent of ₹1,000. The land was given to major industry bodies, including the South Indian Film Workers’ Federation, the Tamil Film Producers’ Council, and the South Indian Artistes’ Association. The plan was to build housing for film workers.
However, construction did not happen within three years. As a result, the government canceled the order. Film industry representatives later urged officials to reinstate the allocation.
Tamil Nadu Government Approves Reinstatement
After assuming office, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin met with film industry representatives. They listened to their concerns and decided to revive the land allocation. This move ensures that the land can finally be used for housing.
Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Statement on the Decision
Addressing the media on February 21, 2025, Udhayanidhi Stalin explained the decision. He stated, “In 2010, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi allocated 90 acres in Payyanur for 99 years at ₹1,000 per year. The purpose was to provide housing for film workers. Since construction was delayed, the order was canceled. Now, after multiple requests from unions, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has approved its reinstatement.”
Tamil Nadu’s ₹180 Crore Land Allocation for Film Workers
The 90-acre land, valued at ₹180 crore, will now be available at its original lease terms. By reinstating this allocation, the Tamil Nadu government is prioritizing the welfare of film workers. The decision allows industry bodies to build multi-storied residential complexes, addressing housing shortages in the sector.
Tamil Nadu’s Support for the Film Industry
This decision is part of Tamil Nadu’s broader plan to support its film industry. The government is also investing ₹500 crore to build a world-class film city in Poonamallee, Chennai. This facility will include LED walls, VFX studios, and high-tech production units. These efforts will strengthen Tamil Nadu’s position as a major filmmaking hub.
Future Impact on Tamil Nadu’s Film Industry
With this land allocation reinstated, thousands of film workers in Tamil Nadu will soon have access to affordable housing. This move not only improves their living conditions but also boosts industry morale. By taking such steps, Tamil Nadu’s leadership ensures continued growth for Kollywood and its workforce.
