First Live-in Registered in Uttarakhand Under UCC Rules

Uttarakhand has registered its first live-in relationship under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Five more applications are under review as the new law comes into force.

The UCC, enforced on Jan 27, 2025, makes live-in registration mandatory. Couples must fill a 16-page form and obtain a certificate proving their eligibility for marriage if they choose to wed.

The UCC registration process requires details to be kept encrypted, ensuring privacy. Officials can only view application numbers, while personal details remain with the registrar.

Some activists have raised privacy concerns, stating that women’s safety and autonomy could be at risk. Critics argue the law allows interference in personal choices and relationships.

Bajrang Dal leaders claim they are monitoring interfaith couples, raising fears of misuse. Officials, however, assure that registrations are confidential and cannot be accessed by third parties.
