Mullaperiyar Dam Dispute: SC Warns Against Unnecessary Hype

The Supreme Court has warned against unnecessary hype over the Mullaperiyar Dam dispute, stating that claims of Kerala’s devastation due to Tamil Nadu’s actions are exaggerated.

Tamil Nadu approached the SC after Kerala revoked permission for tree-cutting near the dam. The court has now assigned a new supervisory committee to resolve the matter.

The court stressed the need for a balanced solution acceptable to both states. If disputes remain, the committee will report to the SC for further resolution.

Tamil Nadu insists the dam is safe and crucial for five districts. Kerala argues it's aging and unsafe, demanding decommissioning. The SC had ruled in TN’s favor in 2014.

During the 2018 Kerala floods, the SC temporarily ordered the water level to be reduced. Tamil Nadu now claims Kerala is deliberately obstructing maintenance work.

The SC will now hear all Mullaperiyar-related matters with a three-judge bench. Both states must cooperate under constitutional values for a fair resolution.
