Ratan Tata's Name Protected: Delhi HC on Trademark Misuse

Delhi HC protects Ratan Tata’s name, restraining unauthorized use of his identity for awards or events without consent.

A journalist used "Ratan Tata National Icon Award," falsely linking it to Tata Trusts, leading to legal action by Tata Group.

The High Court ruled that Ratan Tata is a well-known figure, and his name must be protected from unauthorized commercial use.

The defendant agreed to stop using the name and event branding but had already misled the public with false associations.

The Court termed the act as an "egregious infringement" of Tata’s goodwill, ordering an immediate halt to its use.

Tata Group also seeks ₹2 crore in damages for the reputational harm caused by the unauthorized use of its trademarks.
