2024 Lok Sabha Election Result: BJP Wins , But Falls Short of Majority

The Election Commission of India has declared the results for 2024 Lok Sabha Election Result for 542 of the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies. BJP secured 240 seats and the Congress 99. The Beed constituency in Maharashtra remains undecided, with NCP candidate Bajrang Manohar Sonwane leading against BJP’s Pankaja Munde.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to form his third consecutive government, despite the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) falling short of the 272 majority mark. The BJP, which ran its campaign under Modi’s leadership, experienced a significant drop from its previous tallies of 303 seats in 2019 and 282 in 2014.

Mukesh Dalal, BJP’s Surat candidate, was elected unopposed, leaving only 542 seats in contention. The BJP will rely on allies such as N Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) with 16 seats and Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) with 12 seats to reach a majority.

The Congress, part of the opposition INDIA bloc, improved its performance significantly from 52 seats in 2019 to 99 seats, making gains in states like Rajasthan and Haryana. In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party boosted the INDIA bloc’s morale with 37 seats, while West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) increased its count to 29 seats from 22. The BJP’s count in West Bengal dropped from 18 to 12 seats.

Despite high hopes and favourable exit polls, the BJP-led NDA did not achieve a landslide victory in 2024 Lok Sabha Election. Over 640 million votes were counted in this extensive democratic exercise, held from April 19 to June 1 across seven phases.

With the declared results, the NDA is now focused on solidifying its alliances to ensure a stable government formation for the next term.

The recent election results highlight the intricate dynamics of coalition politics in India. As the BJP secures its position with the help of allies, it underscores the importance of strategic alliances and compliance with electoral regulations for a stable government formation.
