Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 Is Likely To Generate ₹2,000,000,000,000

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, began at Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj this morning, with more than 50 lakh people taking the first holy dip at Sangam, the point where the Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati rivers meet.

The Kumbh Mela, often hailed as the world’s largest gathering of people, is set to draw over 400 million devotees to Prayagraj for the 2025 Maha Kumbh, surpassing the populations of the United States and Russia combined. This monumental event, held once every 12 years, spans an impressive 4,000 hectares and is scheduled to run until February 26, 2025.

In addition to its spiritual significance, the Maha Kumbh is expected to be a major economic catalyst for Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state. The state has allocated a budget of ₹7,000 crore for the 45-day festival, which is projected to fuel an economic surge of up to ₹2 lakh crore. This estimate is based on the assumption that each of the 40 crore visitors will spend an average of ₹5,000 during their stay. However, industry forecasts suggest that individual spending could reach ₹10,000, potentially increasing the total economic impact to ₹4 lakh crore. This event is expected to boost both nominal and real GDP by over 1%.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the economic benefits of past Kumbh events, pointing out that the 2019 Ardh Kumbh Mela contributed ₹1.2 lakh crore to the state’s economy. He added that with an anticipated 40 crore pilgrims this year, the Maha Kumbh could generate substantial growth. Adityanath, a prominent member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), also noted that the Maha Kumbh would likely become the world’s largest temporary city, capable of hosting between 5 to 10 million people at any given time.

According to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), several sectors are poised to see significant growth during the event. The food and beverage industry alone, which includes packaged goods, meals, and beverages, is expected to contribute ₹20,000 crore. Religious items, such as offerings, idols, and spiritual literature, are forecast to generate another ₹20,000 crore.

Transportation and logistics, including both local and interstate services, are set to bring in ₹10,000 crore, while tourism-related services, such as travel packages and guides, could add another ₹10,000 crore. Other sectors like temporary medical camps, Ayurvedic products, and digital services such as e-ticketing and Wi-Fi are anticipated to generate an additional ₹15,000 crore.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the start of Maha Kumbh as a ‘very special day’ for crores of people who ‘cherish Indian values and culture’.

‘I am happy to see Prayagraj abuzz with countless people coming there, taking the holy dip and seeking blessings. Wishing all pilgrims and tourists a wonderful stay,’ he said.

Mr Adityanath also described it as a confluence of cultures and a message of unity in diversity.

The world’s largest spiritual and cultural gathering ‘Mahakumbh’ is starting from today in the holy city of Prayagraj. All the revered saints, Kalpvasis and devotees who have come to experience unity in diversity, to meditate and take a holy bath at the confluence of faith and modernity are heartily welcomed,‘ he said in a post on X.

Held once every 12 years, the Kumbh Mela is celebrated at four sacred locations across India: Haridwar in Uttarakhand along the Ganges, Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh by the Shipra, Nashik in Maharashtra on the banks of the Godavari, and Prayagraj, where the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers converge. The event rotates between these sites, with each occurrence timed according to specific astrological alignments of the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter, making it one of the most sacred and spiritually significant festivals in Hinduism.

This year, the following dates are expected to draw the most number of crowd –

Date Event
14 January 2025 Makar Sankranti (First Shahi Snan)
29, January 2025 Mauni Amavasya (Second Shahi Snan),
3 February 2025 Basant Panchami (Third Shahi Snan),

12 February 2025 Maghi Purnima
26 February 2025  Mahashivratri (Final Snan).

This year’s Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj is set to accommodate millions of pilgrims, with preparations including around 150,000 tents to house visitors, 3,000 kitchens, 145,000 restrooms, and 99 parking lots. The massive scale of the event is matched by a robust security infrastructure, with over 40,000 police officers deployed to maintain order and manage the enormous crowds. To enhance safety, surveillance cameras equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) are installed for continuous monitoring of the site.

The transportation network has also been ramped up, with Indian Railways adding nearly 100 extra trains, increasing the total to 3,300 trips, in addition to regular services heading to Prayagraj. Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, expects the event to attract over 1.5 million international visitors this year.

A central feature of the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 is the sacred ritual of Shahi Snans, where lakhs of devotees immerse themselves in the holy rivers, believing that these purifying baths cleanse their souls and wash away their sins. This iconic practice draws pilgrims from all corners of the world, reinforcing the Kumbh Mela’s significance as a spiritual and cultural phenomenon. GST Portal Experienced Technical Glitches, Filing Deadlines Extended

0

The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) had announced on its social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), that the GST portal experienced technical glitches. To address the disruption, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has extended the deadlines for filing various GST returns by two days each.

The deadline for filing the GSTR-1 return for monthly filers has been extended to January 13, 2025, while quarterly filers under the Quarterly Return Filing and Monthly Payment of Taxes (QRMP) scheme now have until January 15, 2025. Similarly, the GSTR-3B filing deadline for monthly filers is extended to January 22, 2025. Quarterly GSTR-3B filers now have staggered deadlines: January 24, 2025, for some states and January 26, 2025, for others.

GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B are interlinked, as the details of outward supplies reported in GSTR-1 form the basis for buyers’ GSTR-2B, a crucial document for reconciling purchases and claiming Input Tax Credit (ITC). Chartered Accountant Ashish Niraj explains, “Since GSTR-1 deadlines were extended, GSTR-2B generation was delayed, necessitating an extension of GSTR-3B deadlines.”

CBIC issued additional extensions for related returns. The deadlines for filing GSTR-5 and GSTR-6 for December 2024 are extended to January 15, 2025, while GSTR-7 and GSTR-8 are now due on January 12, 2025.

Chartered Accountants welcomed the move. Himank Singla of SBHS & Associates called it “a relief,” while Hunny Munjal emphasized the interconnected nature of GST filings and the importance of timely extensions. Munjal noted that under Section 16 of the CGST Act, ITC claims hinge on data reconciliation, a process disrupted by the portal issues.

Taxpayers and professionals are advised to monitor updates on the GSTN portal and CBIC’s social media for further announcements.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s Vision for 2025: AI Innovations, Urgency, and Employee Support

0

In a recent company-wide email, Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai elaborated on ambitious plans for the coming year by emphasizing how it will promote artificial intelligence. It shows confidence that the company will continue to lead in the rapidly changing landscape. The message underlined how urgent the adaptation of rapid technological advancements was and how important support was for employees during crises.

Reflecting on 2024, Pichai said that Google ended the year on a high note, replete with big-ticket innovations such as Gemini 2.0, Willow, and Veo 2-all part of the company’s full-stack approach to AI. “We ended 2024 on a super high note with Gemini 2.0, Willow, Veo 2, and lots of innovation across Search, YouTube, Cloud, Android, Pixel, and more,” Pichai wrote. “The foundation to all of this is our technical and AI leadership, made possible by our full stack approach, and people were inspired by what we built.”

As the company starts 2025, Sundar Pichai said he was confident that Google would continue its momentum. “As we start the year, I have been reviewing demos for the products and features we’re rolling out in the next few months.”. The progress is amazing, and I’m confident we will keep the momentum going in 2025,” he added. This time frame aligns with Google’s annual developer conference, Google I/O, typically scheduled for May, where the company often reveals its latest advancements.

Pichai’s message was not solely focused on innovation; it also addressed the urgency of the present moment. “The urgency of this moment, how rapidly technology is evolving, and our opportunity to reimagine our products and processes for a new era” were key points Pichai emphasized. He called on employees to focus relentlessly on leveraging AI to solve real user problems, setting the stage for a pivotal year ahead.

While discussing future products and technologies, Pichai wasn’t afraid to get to the human side of things. Amid his plans for the future of Google, Pichai expressed concern for employees affected by the devastating Southern California wildfires and reported that Google is actively engaged in relief efforts. An employee matching program and funding via Google.org are part of the effort. Such information is now also being distributed by Google Search, Maps, and Waze to provide employees and the community at large with important information during these critical moments.

Google and Pichai enter 2025 with the message: pushing forward on some of the world’s most ambitious AI innovations but equally committed to supporting employees and the communities that they serve.

Maya and Leah Tata Appointed to the Board of Trustees at Sir Ratan Tata Industrial Institute

Maya and Leah Tata, daughters of Noel Tata, are stepping into the spotlight, taking on significant roles within the Tata Group, one of India’s most influential conglomerates. Noel Tata, the half-brother of the legendary Ratan Tata, succeeded him as chairman of Tata Trusts, the philanthropic powerhouse that indirectly controls the $165 billion Tata Group.

The late Ratan Tata, who passed away in October, left behind a towering legacy, having transformed the Tata Group into a global force. As chairman of Tata Trusts, he oversaw its 66 percent stake in Tata Sons, the group’s holding company, which commands a dominant position in iconic firms like Tata Consultancy Services and Tata Motors, the owner of Jaguar Land Rover.

In a move that signals a new chapter for the Tata Group, Maya and Leah Tata have been inducted into the board of trustees of the Sir Ratan Tata Industrial Institute (SRTI), a subset of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust. This development, marks a significant step in the family’s continued influence over one of India’s largest business legacies.

The transition, which saw Maya and Leah replacing outgoing trustees Arnaz Kotwal and Freddy Talati, has stirred internally, with Kotwal expressing dissatisfaction over her resignation. The Tata siblings—Maya, Leah, and Neville—are now represented on the boards of several smaller Tata Trusts, though they have yet to join the two main ones: Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust.

Just like Tata Group for any business  leadership transition is a stressful period. You need expert legal assistance to handle this change and stay compliant. Vakilsearch offers comprehensive support for adding a director or other leadership changes. We provide strategic guidance to ensure that all legal aspects of succession, including inheritance and ownership structures, are handled efficiently.

L&T Chairman SN Subrahmanyan Earned ₹51 Crore in FY24

Larsen & Toubro L&T chairman SN Subrahmanyan earned ₹51 crore in FY24. It is 534.57 times the median salary of the company’s employees. Here is a detailed outline of the same:

Breakdown of SN Subrahmanyan’s ₹51 Crore Salary

As per L&T’s Integrated Annual Report for 2023-24, the salary components of SN Subrahmanyan are detailed below:

  • Salary: ₹3.60 crore
  • Perquisites: ₹1.67 crore
  • Retirement Benefits: ₹10.50 crore
  • Commission: ₹35.28 crore

His total remuneration of ₹51.05 crore marks a 43.11% increase compared to the previous year. L&T chairman Subrahmanyan faced criticism for promoting 90-hour workweeks during an employee engagement session. In an undated video, he expressed regret that employees did not work on Sundays and dismissed the importance of home life, stating that the Chinese work ethic was a benchmark for success.

This drew sharp backlash from social media users and public figures like Deepika Padukone and Harsh Goenka. Critics highlighted the disparity between Subrahmanyan’s comfort and the work-life balance expected of L&T employees.

In response, L&T issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to India’s development and asserting that Subrahmanyan’s comments align with the company’s vision of achieving remarkable success. While L&T’s aspirations for excellence are commendable, the backlash underscores the importance of balancing employee well-being with professional goals.

WhatsApp Introduces Images in Polls for Channels in Beta Update

WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature in its latest beta version for Android (v2.25.1.17) that allows users to add images to poll options. This feature, currently available for WhatsApp Channels, aims to make polls more interactive and visually informative.

Channel admins can now attach a specific image to each poll option, providing a clearer representation of choices and making it easier for users to vote. However, if an image is added to one option, images must be included for all other options to ensure consistency.

This update is expected to benefit industries like fashion, food, travel, and design. For example, a business can showcase clothing styles or dishes as poll options to gather customer preferences. The visual nature of the feature may also help users overcome language barriers by identifying options through images.

At this stage, the feature is limited to WhatsApp Channels, and the company plans to test it further before expanding it to group chats and individual conversations. There is no specific timeline for its public release or availability in chats outside Channels.

WhatsApp continues to improve its features to enhance user interaction and engagement. Users can expect more updates as the platform refines its polling capabilities.
